The Fat Beat Diet, November 29

mpact-nicole

This week we started it off with some dance and disco before dropping things down into some hip hop. I’m really loving the latest album Chrome Waves from Kraak and Smaak. Lots of tastiness to be had on that one. Had to drop a bit of Digital Underground since I’ve had a couple of conversations recently about how they’re totally slept on.

Towards the end of the show, Nicole from Mpact Dance dropped by to talk about their plans to create an arts center for at risk youth called The Lab. The project’s been selected as a semi-finalist in a competition for grant money from Aviva and the group hope to reach out to the hip hop community and beyond to garner votes for the project. Voting is super easy for Facebook types, and the voting period runs Dec. 2nd to December 11th. Those interested in supporting the project should visit their facebook page, vote4thelab.com or the Aviva page itself.

The Fat Beat Diet, November 22nd

Kicked it off with some nice 80s vibes this week before dropping it down into some hip hop. We talked a bit last week about all the crazy hip hop albums that came out in ’93. Well, this week it was Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle, so you know I had to drop a ‘lil bit of that in the hip hop set. Plus a whole bunch of other goodness.

The Fat Beat Diet, November 15th

This is the second half of the Road Pops for the week, plus the regular Fat Beat Diet, seeing as both shows flowed right into one another this week.

I’ve fascinated by the intersection of two songs. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Timing is important: ride the mix a little too long and you run the risk of ruining the mix because of song changes, not to mention the mix running away from you. I tend to like pushing my luck with the length of my mixes, but it came back to bite me in the ass a few times this week.

A lot of DJing is experimentation, throwing a couple things together and seeing if you like the result. Now that I’m pretty much retired from the DJ game, I don’t get the chance to experiment a lot outside of the show. The downside for you listeners being of course that you get to listen to me miss a few mixes here and there as I try out new mixes. Hopefully it doesn’t detract too much from your enjoyment of the show.

1993 was an absolutely ridiculous year for hip hop. So, this last week we celebrated the release of A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Maurauders and Wu Tang Clan’s Enter the 36 Chambers. After that more musical goodness. Enjoy.

Road Pops (Part 1), November 15th

Filled in for the Road Pops this week. We had a live performance that was supposed to start pretty early on the show, but because of scheduling and setup, it didn’t end up getting underway until halfway through.

This is the first part of the show, where I was just playing some old soul and funk ahead of Marshall Lawrence‘s in-studio performance (Super nice guy, btw). This is a bit outside what I usually have on the site, but I thought I’d include it anyways, because it’s a nice live set, and the funk songs at the beginning are pretty good too.

The Fat Beat Diet, November 8th

Logger problems again this week prevented me from putting up the audio file of the show, so the tracklist will have to suffice. Kinda sucks, I actually really enjoyed the show. I’m actually pretty close to just re-playing the whole thing just so I can put it up here for ya’ll. We’ll see…

Big Funding Drive Thanks

barney-confetti

Well, you guys really came through this year. Once everything was counted and added up, The Fat Beat Diet ended up raising $3500. That’s fantastic! I’m humbled and overwhelmed by the support and can’t begin to tell you guys and gals how thankful I am for the success of the Funding Drive this year.

CJSW raised over $220,000 this year, making this the most successful funding drive not only in CJSW history, but in Canadian campus and community station history. You folks are amazing, take a bow.

Hopefully y’all have picked up your swag and downloaded your mixes. I hope you enjoy them!

Funding Drive 2013 Is Coming!
October 18-25

Kong

What the heck is a funding drive? Here is CJSW‘s audio primer

CJSW Funding Drive Primer

Now with that out of the way, let me quote the fine folks at headquarters and myself liberally and tell you that CJSW’s annual funding drive runs Friday October 18th through to the 25th. For one week every year we take a break from being the best radio station in town, and ask you — our listeners — to help us out. With Money.

All the money raised during our annual Funding Drive campaign goes towards our capital budget (like it always does), paying for everything from maintaining our fancy 4000 watt broadcast tower, to our CD players, our headphones, and all the other costs associated with running a radio station. Thanks to your generous donations last year, the station is just about to increase the 4,000 watts we currently broadcast up to around 20,000. This increase will extend our signal a little further than it currently travels, but most importantly it should help with the interference within the city limits. It would also make CJSW one of the highest powered community radio stations anywhere in Canada!

This year, we’re hoping to put your hard earned dollars at work on improving CJSW’s website. We’re looking to expand our podcasting to the majority of our shows and make playlists available in real time to our listeners.

Pledging is easy. You can all the pledge line at 403-220-5000 between October 18th through to the 25th, or make a donation on-line at www.cjsw.com. Listen to CJSW 90.9 FM and check out www.cjsw.com everyday to find out about all the great swag we have to offer for pledges. Help us reach our goal of $200,000.

Funding Drive and the Fat Beat Diet

I run this blog at my own expense and all my time with CJSW is volunteer work. I do it for the love, but pledging to my show is your opportunity to show your support – and it is greatly appreciated.

Now that the Fat Beat Diet kicks off the very successful Friday night lineup at CJSW, I’ve got more listeners than ever before. I’m looking forward to hearing from each and every one of you over the course of the Funding Drive show, which is this Friday from 6-7pm MT.

Being on the first day of the Funding Drive is a bit stressful – I’ve never had to have my shit together so early on in the Funding Drive before, but it’s worth it — and I hope you think so two.

Fat Beat Diet Incentives

As always, I’ll be putting together a few tasty mixes as added incentive to pledge on the show. These days, I pretty much only makes mixes for Funding Drive, so this is just about your only chance to get a mix from me (outside of the 50 odd mixes I make every other week of the year as part of the show, duh). These mixes are finely crafted, and I always put a lot of love into them. These exclusive mixes are never redistributed outside of the Funding Drive. You’ll never see these up on soundcloud a week after Funding Drive (like I’ve seen other programmers do) to ensure that all you fine pledgers don’t feel like chumps.

I’m still working out the details on my mixes, but I should have a better idea about those closer to my show. This year, i think I’ll be continuing on last year’s digital distribution, unless I hear a flurry of comments about you folks loving the CDr’s I’ve been burning for the last 10yrs or so.

Support the Fat Beat Diet!

If you’re a regular downloader but don’t listen to the show live on air, please pledge by donating online on the cjsw site. Online donating is now open. If you can do this before the show this Friday, October 18th, that will likely greatly increase the chances of getting what you’re after. Online donating has been streamlined this year, but to make sure supporting the this show, please enter the Fat Beat Diet as the show name as illustrated below.

Make me Proud!

Fat Beat Diet fans have yet to let me down, and I’m hoping this year will be no different. Thanks in advance for your support.
