Super fun show tonight starting out with a disco feeling and moving in to more straight up house and electro towards the end. Definitely the recipe for getting someone in a dancing mood.

The Cool Ruler Gregory Isaacs, RIP
This week, we’re still basking in the afterglow of the adrenaline rush that is funding drive, so the mix is talk free. We start by paying our respects to the late great Gregory Isaacs, who passed away in late october. Following that, we ran through some downtempo then onto some some hip hop. Local duo Dragon Fli Empire have a new song which they’ve entered into the All-Albertan Song Contest, so I had to drop that but mostly the hip hop’s on a classic tip. We slowly wind up the show towards the end, and will probably pick up where this left off for next week’s show.
No relistening to the show for the week of October 28th. As some of you know, it was the Annual Funding Drive show, so I’ll spare you the torture of having to listen to me talk nearly non-stop for an hour.
Nevertheless, if you were listening, and more importantly, if you took the extra step and pledged to the show, a heart-felt thank you from the bottom of my heart. This year the show raised over $2000! That easily breaks the show’s previous high mark and we managed to do it with a half an hour less time. Kudos to you, my faithful listeners. CJSW managed to raise nearly $190,000 over the course of the week, which is phenomenal. Mind blowing, even. To put it in perspective, over the course of their recent funding drive CKUA raised $580,330, and they run their funding drive for two weeks and over the whole of Alberta, not just the little bit of Calgary that we can reach with our little 4 kilowatt tower (CKUA broadcasts with 100KW in Calgary alone). So nearly $ 200K is really impressive for our little station. Our supporters are second to none, and the everyone at CJSW loves each and every one of you.
I get very few comments on the blog, and even fewer calls in to the show, so it’s really hard to judge how people feel about the show. Really, the only hard metric I have is the amount I raise each year during funding drive. Other show hosts are for the most part in exactly the same boat. During Funding Drive and for the week after, all we do is ask each other ‘How’d your show go?’ which can be translated directly to ‘How much?’ In my mind, $800-$1200 is a very reasonable show total, depending on the time of day and duration of the show (overnighters obviously have the bar set a little lower). Thanks to all of you who pledge for handily blowing my expectations! I hope you enjoy the exclusive mixes I put together as incentives.
Another year, another funding drive. This is my 9th with the Fat Beat Diet, and things have been going crazy. I’ve been super buys putting together the mix incentives tfor this year, and I’ve still got a lot to do in the 8hrs that remain between now and my show.
As I’ve written in the past, CJSW?s annual funding drive runs Friday October 22nd through to the 29th. For one week every year we take a break from being the best radio station in town, and ask you, our listeners, to help us out.
All the money raised during our annual Funding Drive campaign goes towards our capital budget (like it always does), paying for everything from maintaining our fancy new 4000 watt broadcast tower, to our CD players, our headphones, and all the other costs associated with running a radio station.
Thanks to your support, CJSW has expanded its presence in the community as well! CJSW is everywhere! We?re out supporting Calgary?s many festivals and community events, and we?re broadcasting live shows to you from local venues.
Pledging is easy. You can all the pledge line at 403-220-5000 between October 22nd and October 29th, or make a donation on-line at www.cjsw.com. Listen to CJSW 90.9 FM and check out www.cjsw.com everyday to find out about all the great swag we have to offer for pledges. Help us reach our goal of $200,000.
I run this blog at my own expense and all my time with CJSW is volunteer work. I do it for the love, but pledging to my show is your opportunity to show your support – and it is greatly appreciated.
When the station re-organized its nighttime schedule into 1hr blocks earlier this year, I was offered a slot on the venerable Friday night block, along side the Musicquarium, Dirty Needles, Fullmoon Funkalicious, and Remote Emissions. As much as I love those shows and hosts, I made the decision to stick it out on Thursday nights. I didn’t want electronic music and hip hop to be relegated to one night a week. If you appreciate this and enjoy hearing non-rock (not that there’s anything against rock…) at all hours of the day, I hope you’ll support me and other shows like Funk Sinden and Mental Illness which showcase these genres of music outside of Friday nights.
Once again this year, all donors of $25 or more to the Fat Beat Diet will receive a copy of Keep On Playin’, 2010’s upbeat/dance mix. Here’s a short sample of what to expect:
Keep On Playin' snippetI’ve also got two other mixes: Wobble Funk and The Book of Right On. The former is a mix of dubstep, drum’n’bass and future music while the latter is pretty much a hip hop mix. They’re each going to be going around the $75 mark.
Wobble Funk snippet The Book of Right On snippet$200 will get you all three mixes, plus all the tracks in unmixed form as well and a few other goodies (listen to the show for details)
We’ve also got a huge pile of CDs to sweeten the pot as well, including stuff from Neferiu Records and more.
If you?re a regular downloader but don?t listen to the show live on air, feel free to pre-pledge either by sending me an email (Preferred) with your address and phone number and the amount you?d like to pledge, or by donating via paypal on the cjsw site (send along a note that you?re donating specifically to the Fat Beat Diet). If you can do this before tonight’s show, that will greatly increase the chances of getting what you’re after.
Thanks!
For this pre-Funding Drive edition of the show, we’re rolling with a bit of hip hop, old and new, and some drum’n’bass, then back to a bit of hip hop to finish. Not much more complicated than that, really. Here it is:

The host whose show follows me ended up getting caught behind the 8-ball this week, so he asked me to do his show as well. Sweet! That translated into an extended 2hr show. With so much time on my hands, it felt really comfortable to play in a couple of different genres and have a nice progression to the show. The show ends up in an uptempo dance mood. U-Tern’s (weren’t we just talking about him?) mash-up genius Walking on Lighting is such a satisfying slice of pop magic, I almost feel guilty playing it on campus radio — almost. Actually, the same could be said of the latest Duck Sauce tune as well. But I’m sure you can handle it ;)

A few days after last week’s show I caught Mark Ronson’s performing Bang Bang Bang on Letterman.
Helping Ronson out on vocal duties are the always excellent Q-Tip and relative newcomer Amanda Warner of MNDR. I’m not super familiar with MNDR, but i kinda like the little that I’ve heard and she seems quite charming in this interview with The Fader.
However, as a bilingual Canadian, I do take issue with her mangling of the French language. I’ve heard Alouette enough times, even sung it a few times myself, but every time I hear Warner massacre the word plumerai, I die a little inside.
Thanks to my Canadian compatriot, I don’t ever have to hear it again. Vancouver’s U-tern added some disco snap to the original, and stripped it of the offending vocals. While I miss Q-Tip’s contributions, not having to hear the offending lyrics is well worth it (Which is why I played it on my last show).
I’ll let you judge for yourself however. You might not mind the original vocals as much as I do. U-tern’s offering up his version for free on his blog. You can find the original in its vocal glory here, at least for the moment. You should check out the official video for the song too, it’s pretty fun.
A nice uptempo mix from house to drum’n’bass, including the man called Zinc, who rolls through town tomorrow. The bassline in T.E.E.D’s Monster Remix has been driving me crazy recently, so I had to get it out there. There’s a few technical wobbles at the beginning of the mix, but hopefully that doesn’t detract too much from your enjoyment of the show…

Thought I’d take the opportunity this week to celebrate Ninja Tune‘s 20th anniversary. The label itself isn’t doing so bad at celebrating its birthday, what with its free downloads and ridiculous 6 CD + 6 7″ boxset (I think it might already be sold out). Label honchos really wanted the boxset to be forward looking, so rather than being a retrospective, it charts what the future might hold for the label.
In contrast, I wanted to play a few of my favourite tracks from the label, reaching decades back in time to show you the cuts which initially got me hooked on this fantastic, game-changing label.

Lately, I’ve been feeling like the show is becoming nothing but non-stop errors on my behalf. This week for example, I completely messed up behind the mic. The fine tech folks at the station have decided to put a mic right beside the DJ booth, which is awesome since the board is pretty far from the DJ decks and something i’ve complained about before. So now, in theory, I can back announce right from behind the decks — except that it turns out I’m completely useless with this mic. For some reason, I can’t seem to get it right at all: Either I think it’s on when it’s clearly not, or I forget to fade the music altogether, so you can’t hear me speak above the din of the music in the background. I find it quite comical actually; I mean, you’d think that after almost 10yrs of this, I would have moved beyond making these kind of rookie mistakes. Nope. Luckily, these are rather minor nuisances (unless you’re listening live and really, really want to know the name of a song). At least it’s not as bad as what happens to this poor DJ:
Anyways, the bonus to you online listeners is that you don’t have to listen to me back-announce tracks at the end of the show (I took it out in post), or hear me over the DJ Premiere-produced Showbiz and AG track (because, apparently, I didn’t have the mic up). Sweet! More music for you folks.
Those snafus aside, I’m actually pretty happy with how it turned out. Granted, I’m pretty happy anytime I can bust out some Wu, some Public Enemy, and some Parliament!
Update: Oct. 12: Now with the correct show!
