Mostly hip hop beats this show, although we did kick it up a notch for a few tracks at the end. Had to drop this Extremities track in the middle of the show this week.
I only just came up on it, but the track’s been around for a year or so. No matter, it’s been getting heavy spins on the vitrola at home. Here’s the whole show.
After Yeah, What She Said focused their show on Amy Winehouse, Judy Garland, Janis Joplin and Marilyn Monroe we at the Fat Beat Diet had to kick things off with Dusty Springfield’s great cover of Piece of My Heart, a song made popular by Joplin (though originally written for Erma Franklin). After that, we wound it up through some funk songs before dropping into some Amy Winehouse on the 1yr anniversary of her passing.
After connecting Winehouse to Nas, we then made the connection to Main Source, who’s seminal album Breaking Atoms turned 21 this week (Thanks Soul Sides). Then on to some more hip hop before I flubbed a mix out of Q-tip’s Breath and Stop. I was desperately trying to remember the original sample source for the baseline which ends J.Period’s edit but couldn’t remember it on the spot. I knew it was a jazz cat, and for some reason I was trying to come up with Lou Donaldson but played Grant Green instead. Wouldn’t have mattered anyways as the correct answer was Freddie Hubbard and Povo. Next time…
Anyways, then some more hip hop before slowing things down with Zo’s cover of George Michael’s Everything She Wants. I love the way Zo sneak in a bit of MJ into the bridge (The whole EP is available for download on the Foreign Exchange website). Then a great sumer track from Little Dragon and a few more tasty biscuits to end the show (Don’t sleep on Oddisee‘s People Hear What They See).
Hip hop beats to start it out before hittin’ you up with some nostalgic straight up bangers. Then winding it up with some acid jazz/dnb/house goodies at the end of the show.
Had to get out of town on for a few weeks at the end of June so big thanks going out to Adrienne and Richard who kindly stepped in for the 3rd and 4th week of June, respectively. Then I had issues with the station logger upon my return, so I wasn’t able to get a copy of my show for July 2nd, which is too bad because I thought it was a really good show . The vacation was really good though, in case you’re wondering…
This week, we had Calgary house music legend Jon Delerious drop in for a little chat and a quick live mix . I’m hoping to make a monthly guest spot a bit more of a regular occurrence on the show, and it was great to have Jon kick things off. Not only is he simply one of the nicest guys out there, he is a master behind the decks – the dude is so smooth! It was an absolute pleasure to have him come down and we at the Fat Beat Diet wish him continued success.
Jon Delerious celebrates 9 years at his residency Tahiti Treat down at Bamboo tonight, so you should definitely go check that out tonight — or any other Friday night for that matter — for a grand ol’ time.
Listening to the Beastie Boys for the next quarter century, I mostly thought of them as a group package rather than an assortment of distinct MCs. Their telltale style was a three-man, tag team weave, where each rapper – Adam “MCA” Yauch, Adam “Ad Rock” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond – often finished each other’s sentences.
I never thought much of the beasties individually until Yauch’s passing, and now with him gone his deep voice speaks out to me from all of their songs. It’s hard to think of the group without him, and that saddens me a lot… more than I expected, in fact.
