Lotsa catching up to do! This one’s house then hip hop, which kind of seems a favourite progression of late for the show.

This week we started it off with some dance and disco before dropping things down into some hip hop. I’m really loving the latest album Chrome Waves from Kraak and Smaak. Lots of tastiness to be had on that one. Had to drop a bit of Digital Underground since I’ve had a couple of conversations recently about how they’re totally slept on.
Towards the end of the show, Nicole from Mpact Dance dropped by to talk about their plans to create an arts center for at risk youth called The Lab. The project’s been selected as a semi-finalist in a competition for grant money from Aviva and the group hope to reach out to the hip hop community and beyond to garner votes for the project. Voting is super easy for Facebook types, and the voting period runs Dec. 2nd to December 11th. Those interested in supporting the project should visit their facebook page, vote4thelab.com or the Aviva page itself.

Kicked it off with some nice 80s vibes this week before dropping it down into some hip hop. We talked a bit last week about all the crazy hip hop albums that came out in ’93. Well, this week it was Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle, so you know I had to drop a ‘lil bit of that in the hip hop set. Plus a whole bunch of other goodness.

This is the second half of the Road Pops for the week, plus the regular Fat Beat Diet, seeing as both shows flowed right into one another this week.
I’ve fascinated by the intersection of two songs. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Timing is important: ride the mix a little too long and you run the risk of ruining the mix because of song changes, not to mention the mix running away from you. I tend to like pushing my luck with the length of my mixes, but it came back to bite me in the ass a few times this week.
A lot of DJing is experimentation, throwing a couple things together and seeing if you like the result. Now that I’m pretty much retired from the DJ game, I don’t get the chance to experiment a lot outside of the show. The downside for you listeners being of course that you get to listen to me miss a few mixes here and there as I try out new mixes. Hopefully it doesn’t detract too much from your enjoyment of the show.

1993 was an absolutely ridiculous year for hip hop. So, this last week we celebrated the release of A Tribe Called Quest’s Midnight Maurauders and Wu Tang Clan’s Enter the 36 Chambers. After that more musical goodness. Enjoy.

Filled in for the Road Pops this week. We had a live performance that was supposed to start pretty early on the show, but because of scheduling and setup, it didn’t end up getting underway until halfway through.
This is the first part of the show, where I was just playing some old soul and funk ahead of Marshall Lawrence‘s in-studio performance (Super nice guy, btw). This is a bit outside what I usually have on the site, but I thought I’d include it anyways, because it’s a nice live set, and the funk songs at the beginning are pretty good too.

Some post-funding-drive true school hip hop and funk.

Thought I’d kick it off with some house this week on the ‘diet. I didn’t even notice I played the Storm Queen track twice, albeit different remixes — I gotta pay more attention! In my defense, the two tracks were mislabeled and thankfully don’t actually sound all that alike. Rocking out a double dose of Paul Woolford again this week also, with one of his house remixes, and more breaks-y/garage-y type stuff from his Special Request moniker. Then a bit of UKG before mixing in some half-time mellower stuff.

Linking on from last week’s show’s last track, we kicked it off with some Delegation before riding that beat for a few tracks. Then into some hip hop for a while and then we slowly added more gas to the whole thing.

Another 2 hour Dubble Bounce takeover. Downtempo to kick off the show tonight with LA phenom Banks, then rolling up through some hip hop beats. Then we drop into some proper drum’n’bass, because I’ve been on a huge d’n’b kick of late (not too sure why). Then into some great new work from Special Request before dropping back into some dance music and chilling it right out for the last couple tracks of the show.

I felt totally unprepared for this show, and kind of threw it together. I’ve been sick all week, and kind of hard on myself so a couple of questionable song picks and a totally flubbed a mix halfway through the show (though I’ve since removed it in post – yay!) left me feeling less than great about the show. Some days, I walk out of the radio station totally stoked on the show I’ve put together, while other weeks feel more like ‘meh’. This show was definitely one of the latter.
It’s amazing how quick that feeling can turn around though. A few nice comments or emails turn things around really quick, so thanks to those who found parts of this show enjoyable and mentioned it to me.
