Thanks and Gratitude

This won’t mean much to most of you, but trust me, this is seriously blowing up on the texts in the booth at CJSW

I started volunteering at CJSW the year after I moved to Calgary, and I’ve been doing the show in one form or another for near 18 years. I mentioned it briefly during my last show, but pretty much every good thing that happened to me in Calgary happened to me because of my ties to CJSW. It’s been an absolutely huge part of my life for the last two decades. For example, for a while I was part of the CJSW executive, helping out with web stuff. We’d meet weekly on Mondays in the CJSW offices to check on the status of various projects, but this one week for whatever reason we decided to meet at Broken City. The meeting ended pretty early but I was hungry so I stuck around the bar and ate dinner. I’d recently started DJing there because a friend of a friend (who I met at CJSW, natch) dropped my name to the then-owner (who had a show on CJSW). Not much after I finished dinner that night, I met the woman who would become my wife at the bar. I wouldn’t have been there other than because of CJSW. I’ve actually got several more stories a lot like that one.

I mention this just to give a slight glimpse into the effect that CJSW has had on my life. The station and the people directly involved is one thing, but there’s also the listeners. It’s been such a joy to be invited into the living rooms, kitchen, cars, bedrooms of listeners and be able to share music with you all. I’ve loved every moment of it and am incredibly thankful and grateful for the opportunity to do so.

Leading up to and during my last show, many of you reached out to me via email or text and those messages were incredibly powerful. I think a lot of community radio DJs have kind of an abstract idea of who their listeners are, and we tell ourselves, “If I only reach one person, it’s all worth it.” I mean we tell ourselves that because the truth is we’d do it regardless because it’s not about who we reach, our ego or anything even remotely that, it’s just about passion for music and wanting to share the joy that these songs bring us. Regardless, that night I was able to hear from a lot of you, and it made it all worth it and more. I don’t really have the words to express it, but thank you all so much, from the bottom of my heart.

Funding Drive 2016, WHAT?!

cjsw_busad

Wow. I’m going to update the blog one of these days, I promise. I don’t know when exactly, but it’s on my list. Really…

Having said that, CJSW’s annual funding drive is upon us. It runs Friday October 21st through to the 28th. For one week every year we take a break from being the best radio station in town, and ask you — our listeners — to help us out. With Money.

All the money raised during our annual Funding Drive campaign goes towards our capital budget (like it always does), paying for everything from maintaining our fancy broadcast tower, to our CD players, our headphones, and all the other costs associated with running a radio station. Thanks to your generous donations in previous years, the station just launched a kick ass new website complete with tracklistings and podcasting of all shows and the other year, we increased the broadcast signal from 4,000 watts up to 20,000 watts, one of the highest powered community radio stations anywhere in Canada!

Pledging is easy. You can all the pledge line at 403-220-5000 between October 23rd through to the 30th, or make a donation on-line at fundingdrive.ca. Listen to CJSW 90.9 FM and check out www.cjsw.com everyday to find out about all the great swag we have to offer for pledges. Help us reach our goal of $200,000.

Funding Drive and the Fat Beat Diet

All my time with CJSW is volunteer work. I do it for the love, but pledging to my show is your opportunity to show your support – and it is greatly appreciated.

With the Fat Beat Diet kicking off the very successful Friday night lineup at CJSW, I’ve got more listeners than ever before. I’m looking forward to hearing from each and every one of you over the course of the Funding Drive show, which is this Friday, October 21st from 6-7pm MT.

Being on the first day of the Funding Drive is a bit stressful — funding drive is roughly the same time every year, but it still manages to surprise me.

Fat Beat Diet Incentives

As always, I’ll be putting together a few tasty mixes as added incentive to pledge on the show. These days, I pretty much only makes mixes for Funding Drive, so this is just about your only chance to get a mix from me (outside of the 50 odd mixes I make every other week of the year as part of the show, duh). These mixes are finely crafted, and I always put a lot of love into them. These exclusive mixes are never redistributed outside of the Funding Drive. You’ll never see these up on soundcloud a week after Funding Drive (like I’ve seen other programmers do) to ensure that all you fine pledgers don’t feel like chumps.

I’m doing the final QC on the mixes for this year, and they sound great. This year we’ve got digital distribution going, and there’s also a limited number of hard CD copies.

Support the Fat Beat Diet!

If you’re a regular downloader but don’t listen to the show live on air, please pledge by donating online on the cjsw site. Online donating is now open. If you can do this before the show this Friday, October 21st at 6pm MST, that will likely greatly increase the chances of getting what you’re after. Online donating has been streamlined this year, but to make sure supporting the this show, please enter the Fat Beat Diet as the show name as illustrated below.

Podcasting and Tracklists Now Available on CJSW.com

Holy crap, I haven’t updated this in a long, long time! Not to say that I won’t ever, but just in case you’re impatient…

You can now view tracklists and listen again to the shows over at the Fat Beat Diet page at cjsw.com.

A Long Overdue Thank You

Well, it’s been just about a month since our Funding Drive show and after all that craziness, an enormous thank you is long overdue. The station managed to set another record, raising over $250,000 in only a week. Which is bananas. The Fat Beat Diet had one of its most successful funding drives ever, raising somewhere between $3000 and $3400, depending on how the numbers line up. I’m humbled and honoured by the generosity of CJSW’s listeners, so heartfelt thanks and gratitude to each and every one of you who went out of your way to help the station out during our 2015 Funding Drive.

Funding Drive Mixes

Quick sneak peek at the mixes on offer tonight. Over 90 tracks across 3 discs, all in continuously mixed goodness. The New Jack Swag mix is a mixed back of hip hop, new jacks swing, breaks and house. Retro|Future Soul is a two disc mix of future soul music. Disc one is future soul, or what was future soul 20 years ago – over an hour of the best of acid jazz. Disc two is the best of the current crop of future sounds.

New Jack Swag is available as a digital download to everyone who pledges over $50 to the Fat Beat Diet.

Retro|Future Soul is available in a double CD format and digital download to everyone who pledges over $100.

Keep on eye on my twitter feed and I’ll try to put up the other incentives there.

Wow. A hear goes by crazy quick. It seems like just yesterday I was staying up late at night putting the finishing touches on some awesome mixes as Funding Drive incentives and now I’m doing it all over again. For one week every year we take a break from being the best radio station in town, and ask you — our listeners — to help us out. With Money.

This year, we’re once again hoping to put your hard earned dollars at work on various aspects of the listening experience, including getting a new DJ mixer for the booth, which all us Friday night DJs would love (and so should you, because it would make Friday nights even more awesome!).

Pledging is easy. You can all the pledge line at 403-220-5000 between October 23rd through to the 30th, or make a donation on-line at fundingdrive.ca. Disc 2 is the best future sounds of the last year. Don’t miss out on these, they’re amaze-balls.

Funding Drive Wrap Up

Another year, another ridiculously successful funding drive. Thanks, Calgary. While the show might not have done as well as it has in the past, the station blew by previous records and we managed to raise over $240,000 dollars. This money will be directly reinvested into the station and will help make your listening experience even more fantastic. Heartfelt thanks to all of those of you who donated to our 2014 Funding Drive.

ZOMFG! Funding Drive is TOMORROW!!

What the heck is a funding drive? Here is CJSW‘s audio primer from a few years back.

Now with that out of the way, let me quote the fine folks at headquarters and myself liberally and tell you that CJSW’s annual funding drive runs Friday October 24th through to the 31st. This year, we’re once again hoping to put your hard earned dollars at work on improving CJSW’s website. We’re still looking to expand our podcasting to the majority of our shows and make playlists available in real time to our listeners.

While we’re on the subject of Illmatic…

I wrote this almost 10 years ago for a ‘zine called Izzum that a bunch of friends would put out on a monthly basis. Each issue had a column called Essentials, where one of us music snobs would let you know why you should have a certain album in your collection. This issue was the hip hop issue, so I took the opportunity to expand on my feelings about Nas’ Illmatic (which just celebrated its 20th anniversary). I still stand by it.

The Greatest Hip Hop Album of All Time: Ilimatic by Nas.

Don’t agree with me? Fuck you, I don’t care – you’re wrong. While a strong case could be made for say, Public Enemy’s It Takes a Nation of Millions. . . or Run DMC’s Raising Hell (they’re still not as good as Illmatic), when some young punk tried to convince me that Jay Z’s The Black Album was the greatest of all time, I had to school him (told him don’t let niggaz fool him…).

“Understandable smooth shit that murderers move with: The thief’s theme…”

1994. Building upon the seminal release of NWA’s debut, strong releases from the likes of Dr. Dre (The Chronic, 1994) and Snoop (Doggystyle, 1993) had shifted hip hop’s nexus to the Left Coast from its NYC cradle. Suburban wannabe gangstas and greedy marketing executives everywhere were clamoring for the sounds of G-Funk. With a debut the strength of which has rarely, if ever, been duplicated, Nas snatched hip hop and brought him back home. In contrast with the loud and flashy LA drive-bys, Ilimatic was cold steel on a dark night, the carnage only to be revealed later on in the day’s light.

Gathering drum tracks from finest DAISY-age producers, Nas laced Primo, Pete Rock, and Large Professor beats with the smoothest tales of ghetto life through the eyes of a 19 year-old. A gifted storyteller with Buddha-blessed pacing, images of the ghetto were painted without embellishment but with rare beauty. Despite his grim surroundings, a sliver of hope gleams through every track on what is, despite its relaxed flow, a densely packed, 40 minute, 10 song (and not a weak one among them) album.

A true East Coast album, I damn near wore out that cassette in my walkman, listening to it again, again, and again on public transit. One day, switching tapes, a gleam from the clear case caught the eye of the kid across the way. A knowing smile crossed his face when he recognized the cover. Not a word was said, but we knew. And now, you do too.

Nas Illmatic Anniversary
The Fat Beat Diet, April 18th

illmatic

This week, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Nas’ Illmatic. It remains to this day what I consider to be the best hip hop album of all time. If you’re a hip hop fan and you don’t own or haven’t heard this album, you’re dead to me go out and buy it right away. I think I own it in four different formats now.

So we ran through a bunch of Illmatic tracks and original sample material, then some Illmatic inspired or derivative tracks. After the tribute was over, some old hip hop and funk gave way to more recent stuff. Capping off the hip hop, a song from Bishop Nehru, who incidentally as name-checked by Nas himself as the future of music.

Ended the extended show with some drum’n’bass and reggae vibes.

Too late! File removed (mp3 – 112Mb)
